Dear Tribes, Native Villages, I am writing to request your support in the development of a university-level Tribal traditional natural resource management textbook. The Native American Fish & Wildlife Society (NAFWS) and the Chugach Regional Resources Commission (CRRC) of Alaska are developing this textbook along with supporting reference materials using state-of-the-art technology on Tribal Management of Natural Resources. We believe that it is time for Native Americans to write and publish the traditional teachings of our people regarding Natural Resources Management for the proper education of our young people. The text will compare and contrast western science and Indigenous knowledge in management schemes and strategies. This is not an encyclopedia of “Indian-ness,” but the first of several texts and reference materials that are being written by Indigenous people, from an Indigenous perspective, primarily for Indigenous people. As we prepare to submit applications for funding of the textbook and for the accumulation and cataloging of reference materials, archival, and development of the technological support system, we are asking for your support in the form of a Tribal Resolution for this endeavor. There is no financial obligation to you or your Tribe but we strongly encourage that your Council, your Tribal natural resource management program, education program, and your cultural/historic preservation program work with our project representatives to ensure that the final textbook and reference materials accurately represent your tribe’s history and culture. For your convenience and consideration, we are attaching a sample resolution for your use, as well as a one-page abstract that provides broad information on the project. Thank you in advance for your time, assistance and support through a Tribal Resolution. If you would like to discuss this project in more detail, please feel free to contact Sally Williams at our office (303-466-1725) or Ida Hildebrand at the Chugach Regional Resources Commission (907-562-6647). Sincerely,
D. Fred Matt, Executive Director
