Training
FLETC, Wildland Fire Origin and Cause Determination Print E-mail

All – PLEASE get this to the attention of your Tribal PD and FD staff, AND to your Conservation Officers. I would really like to see more of our “Squirrel/Elk/Fish” cops involved with us. I believe that every Tribal FD that responds to brushfires on their Res should have at least one staff trained up in basic Origin and Cause Determination. We (Indian Country) still have some real serious issues with intentionally set wildfires, and more of our youth are getting involved with this dysfunctional behavior.

FLETC usually teams up with a local BLM or USFS host to put these trainings on. Their classes are known to be serious and exacting, but excellent. Do NOT recommend staff to attend these sessions unless you EXPECT them to carry out the duty back at your home unit.

The FI-210 class would be helpful if your staff have already had the half-day FI-110, First Responders, but is not required. It is all week long.

FI-310 requires successful passing of 210, and this staff should already be carded and be in a serious mode of doing Origin and Cause back home. This one requires buckets of pre-work. Also, a full week.

Link to FLETC.gov or DHS.gov and link to their training sites. I don’t have the exact site handy. Their classes usually charge about $400, but again, they tend to be excellent.

Instead of deluging Michael Heath (lead FLETC cadre) with questions/inquiries, please route any issues to my attention first and I will attempt to run interference for you. Note that the next local class is in San Antonio in mid-September.

Thanks for your attention to this opportunity.
