OPEN TO ALL NATIVE YOUTH TO PARTICIPATE (AGES 13-23) including National SYP Participants

 

Since the 2020 National Native American Environmental Awareness Summer Youth Practicum was postponed to Summer 2021, the NAFWS has put together some virtual activities and challenges for the 2020 National SYP participants to complete to win prizes.

CHALLENGE:

NATIVE YOUTH ARE GIVEN A SET OF WEEKLY CHALLENGES TO COMPLETE TO WIN PRIZES!!

Challenges consist of watching videos, reading, posting on social media and encourage spending time outdoors.

 

GUIDELINES:

  • In order to receive the weekly prizes, you must complete ALL the components listed in the weekly challenge by 10:00pm MST of the last day listed on weekly challenge.
  • The challenges will be posted on the NAFWS social medias and website.
  • The challenge videos will be posted on the NAFWS Youtube channel and NAFWS Facebook page:

  • The challenge article will be posted on NAFWS social media, NAFWS website and emailed to SYP participants.
  • To ensure videos are watched, please comment “Watched” AND a sentence of what you learned from the video. Example: Watched. I learned that aspen trees can have clones.
  • NAFWS will be looking at tags as a way to ensure that the social media post challenges are being posted.
  • The Grand Prize will only be awarded to students who have completed ALL challenges from Week One, Two, Three and Four.
  • Prizes will be sent out to the addresses provided on your SYP Application by the end of August 2020.
  • If you may not have internet access to complete challenges or do not have any social media accounts, please let us know and we can offer an alternative.

WEEK ONE CHALLENGES: JULY 7 - JULY 11, 2020 

 

  • Watch the 2020 National Virtual SYP Welcome Video

  • FOLLOW NAFWS on your social media: Instagram, Facebook and/or Twitter.
  • POST a picture on your social media of your favorite outdoor place. TAG nafws. INCLUDE location and why it is your favorite place as your caption.  
  • PRIZES: NAFWS Sticker & Water Bottle

WEEK TWO CHALLENGES: JULY 13 - JULY 18, 2020 

  • POST a picture or video on your social media of your favorite outdoor activity. TAG nafws. INCLUDE location and why it is your favorite activity as your caption. 
  • SPEND TIME in nature to pray and reflect for at least 20 minutes.

  • SHARE your future goals with a family member or friend.

  • WATCH Wildlife Identification Skills & Tips video. 

  • PRIZES: Hammock

WEEK THREE CHALLENGES: JULY 20 - JULY 25, 2020 

  • READ the article, Traditional Ecological Knowledge for Application by Service Scientists. Link for article: https://www.fws.gov/nativeamerican/pdf/tek-fact-sheet.pdf
  • POST a video or Tik Tok on social media. TAG nafws. Video should be about sharing any Traditional Ecological Knowledge you may have about natural resources! In example: it can be you explaining the names of plants or telling a story   or explaining uses of plants or wildlife, etc. Do make sure that it is okay to share. 
  • PRIZES: Headlamp & Camping Utensils

WEEK FOUR CHALLENGES: JULY 27 - AUGUST 1, 2020 

  • WATCH the 2020 NAFWS National Virtual SYP Challenges. Follow Link to Watch:
  • SUBMIT a paragraph (4-6 sentences) about what you have learned from these past four challenge weeks, what was your favorite activity. You can do so by telephone, text, email and/or social media message.
  • PRIZES: NAFWS T-shirt
